Akumal's finest family destination and scuba diving facility on Mexico's Caribbean The Akumal Dive Shop
Akumal is a small quiet village on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, located 65 miles (104 Km.) south of Cancun and 52 miles from the airport. It is the perfect vacation spot for families, divers or anyone who wishes to get away from the rushed, crowded beaches of most Caribbean resorts. Akumal offers two quiet bays and Yalku Lagoon for swimming and snorkeling. There are over 30 reef sites for diving and beautiful white sand beaches for relaxing in the sun or shade
There are a variety of living accommodations, 5 restaurants, two grocery-liquor stores, several boutiques and gift shops, and our Dive Shop, all located within a 15 minute walk of each other. If your stay is concentrated on diving, snorkeling, fishing or just relaxing in the sun, a car is not necessary. Taxis and buses are always available and reasonably priced.
Just let us know what your preferences are. If you wish, we can create a special package for you that will include diving, transportation and accommodations. We are located 15 miles from the Tulum archaeological site, and 40 miles from Coba. Other points of interest and several small restaurants are also within easy access along the coast.
The temperature from September through April is about 80°F, and near 90°F during the remaining months. There is a continual sea breeze, and occasionally you will need a sweater during the winter months.
Fishing is excellent especially in April - September, five minutes after we pull anchor you are among Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, King Fish, Barracuda and others. If you wish we will clean your catch and one of the restaurants will prepare it for your dinner.
We are located to the north of Akumal Bay. Our Dive Shop is fully stocked with all types of scuba diving and snorkeling equipment for sale and rent. The scuba diving sites are less than ten minutes by boat along the world's second largest barrier reef. Our trips are planned to be unhurried and uncrowded, so whether you come as an individual or with a group, you get personal attention from trained Divemasters with extensive experience in these waters. Many people have told us, "This is like belonging to a private dive club!".
Dive Akumal!
Our ocean dive tours begin at the staging area located at The Akumal Dive Shop. There you set up all equipment needed for the dive. We use aluminium 80 cu. ft. tanks filled to 3000 psi. After checking all the equipment we move to the 28' open panga boats. We normally limit our dives to a maximum of eight plus Divemaster and captain. Special arrangements can be made for larger groups.
Dive trips are scheduled at 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily. Night dives begin at dusk. If you are diving with a group of 6 to 8 divers, a boat with divemaster can be made available to you to fit your schedule. The 9:30 dive is between 60' to 100'. The 11:30, 2:30 and night dives are between 30' to 60'. The Dive Master selects the dive site from over 30 locations within a 5 to 10 minutes boat ride. All dives are drift dives over stunning coral reefs. Typically currents are not strong and we have abundant reefs to enjoy a slow pace. Water temperature averages 82°F. Visibility ranges from 50' to 150' weather depending. We recommend a darlex or light wet suit during the winter months.
Equipment rentals: We have available Sherwood BCD's and regulators with alternate air source, spg, and depth gauge. Included in our equipment rentals are: snorkeling equipment, underwater lights and shorty wet suits.
